What is an accessible PDF?
An accessible PDF is a document that people with disabilities can read and navigate with a screen reader, a keyboard or a braille display. Looking right on screen is not enough: the file itself must carry a tagged structure (headings, paragraphs, lists, tables), a correct reading order, alt text on images, a declared language and embedded fonts that map to real characters.
Almost no PDF exported from Word, InDesign or a virtual printer gets all of that right. PDFAccesible checks it rule by rule with an official conformance validator and, where structure is missing, rebuilds it: it converts the document to PDF/A, tags it according to PDF/UA and uses AI to generate the metadata and alt text the original never had.

Are accessible PDFs a legal requirement?
In the public sector, yes: documents published on websites and apps fall under Directive 2016/2102 (in Spain, Royal Decree 1112/2018). For companies, the European Accessibility Act (Directive 2019/882) has applied since 28 June 2025 to products and services such as banking, e-commerce, transport, telecoms and e-books. It covers invoices, contracts, reports, forms and any PDF that is part of the service.
What exactly does the audit check?
Every document is validated with veraPDF, the reference conformance validator, and the result is mapped onto WCAG 2.1/2.2, PDF/UA and PDF/A. We check the tag structure, reading order, image alt text, document language, tables and their headers, bookmarks, metadata and font embedding. The report lists each failure with the rule behind it and an overall accessibility score.
What happens to the documents I upload?
They are processed on our server and tied to your account: only you can open them and they are never public. They are deleted automatically after one month, or within 24 hours if you audit without signing up. You can delete them or export your data at any time from your account; the details are in our privacy policy.
Which documents can I upload?
Any PDF up to 20 MB on the free audit; with an account, the size limit and the number of conversions depend on your plan. One caveat: if the PDF is a scan with no text layer there is nothing to tag — run it through OCR first and upload it again.
Can I automate this from my own system?
Yes. From the Business plan up you get a REST API to upload documents and retrieve reports and converted PDFs, plus an MCP server so an AI assistant can do the same through its own tools. Keys are created and revoked from your account.
